Hey guys how's it going. Just bought a 1997 ford ranger 2.3 tonight. When I purchased it had a check engine light. I pulled the code and it showed cylinder one had a miss. I cleared it and drove home. About a mile or two down the road the check engine light came back on and it's the same code. It's a very slight miss and only at idle or at least it's only noticeable at idle. Not sure if it matters I got 21 mpg on the way home averaging 65mph. Seems like decent mpg but as this truck is new to me I don't know. Don't know if that type of mpg plus the miss signifies anything?

So from some quick searching being as how it's only one cylinder the coil packs seem to be out of the question as being the problem.

Haven't even started investigating yet just wanted to get some opinions. Plan on picking up a service manual in the morning along with some spark plugs and wires and go from there. From searching it seems like a miss could be caused by damn near anything lol from valves to injectors to plugs and wires to vacuum lines Ect....

So where would you guys start? I would think being as only one cylinder misfires and it's not consistent and only at idle I should be able to eliminate a good amount of the above possibilities??

Put a new set set of plugs in her

Replaced plugs and wires and cleared the code it's running great. Now I just need to get ride of the purge valve sensor vmv code.

So far I have replaced purge flow valve, some of the vacuum hoses that looked suspect and replaced the gas cap. Still getting the code so tonight I ordered a new purge solenoid and tomorrow I shall see if it clears it if so all will be well.

Do you happen to know what type of resistance I should get across the two terminals on the solenoid? The one I just pulled off the truck I get 60.5 ohms when I meter between the two spades on the solenoid itself

Just found tomshints write up so when the new solenoid gets in tomorrow we shall see if the code goes away if not I will be tracing the line to the tank I guess
