Side-to-Side Movement under Hard Braking

How confident are you that these brakes got put together and adjusted properly?

looks like the lever feel out and got rubbed into two pieces. Opposed to being sheared in half. I also question why the star wheel adjuster is fully screwed together.

I am pretty confident on the assembly, I made sure to take photos of the original assembly to match it as I reinstalled, the driver side was set up in the same manner and shows no sign of wear or rubbing. I cannot figure out what could have been rubbing on that piece to the point that it broke in half, but it is definitely brittle. I can brake off pieces of it with little to no effort.

As far as the adjuster screw being tight, I did that when I took it off, it had some threading exposed prior to it coming out.

I would suggest posting the picture so we can see. Just because it was like that when you got to it doesn't mean it was even right to begin with.

From the functioning side. The originals from pre replacement have since been deleted.

The adjuster lever spring (between the the hold down spring and adjuster) is not seated in the shoe hole properly. IMO it is another accident waiting to happen on this side. If it pops off the lever will likely fall out just like the other side did.

Do you have that spring running behind the park brake cable? That spring should be straight to the adjuster lever and be hooked completely in the shoe hole.

After another look... I believe that spring is in backwards.

Also exactly why the other side came apart on you.

nope... not backwards... but connected to the shoe wrong.

Still exactly why the other side failed.

The big V in that spring goes entirely through the shoe. The spring coil almost lays on the face of the shoe.

is this correct now? It’s an odd way to position it in there to get it started, I can see why I routed it how I had it unfortunately.

That is correct.

Now take the cable off of the adjuster lever. Let the lever fall to the bottom. Connect the spring to the lever. Then hook the cable to the lever. Then carefully lift the lever with a screw driver and put the cable into the groove in the half circle guide. Done.
