Side-to-Side Movement under Hard Braking

Normally if it pulls to the right it's the left not working properly. Or vise a versa, if it pulls to the left the right is not working properly.

Air won't just jump into the system... unless there is a leak.

Personally I wouldn't waste any more time bleeding... it's time to pull some wheels/drums off and give the brake system a good look.

@Uncle Gump yessir, that’s my next plan of action. Going to order a new set of everything for the rears and then just tear them down and replace what needs replaced.

Yeah, sounds like you could have a wheel cylinder leaking into one of the drums. Brake fluid between the shoes and drum really screws with the coefficient of friction.....

Wellp everything arrived today.. New drums, shoes, hardware/springs, adjuster mechanisms, wheel cylinders.. Ended up only being $100 shipped for the lot. I'm off Monday, so I'll tackle it then.

Well started the swap and haven’t made it far. I can’t these to break free.. impact, breaker bar, nothing.

The plot thickens... another reason I'm not a fan of wheel spacers.

I would take a propane torch and try a bit of heat. Not cherry red hot... jost hot. Probably had some loctite added for good measure.

Sounds like you need more PB Blaster and a bigger impact/longer breaker bar. Can try to use your jack to push up on the breaker bar.

PB blaster and the jack bar as an extension got it done.. didn’t have to bust out the torch.

This being my first time redoing drum brakes, I can now say it’s a royal pain in the ass. Anyway got it all done. Wheel cylinders were definitely the issue, and all of the springs/adjusters were toast too.

pedal is firm again, e brake stops on the 3rd click, no more pulling to the right braking and I have a lot more stopping power. ABS light does still come on if I really mash it down though.

Thanks for the help guys.

I would just make sure you re-torque all the wheel fasteners after a hundred miles or so...

So a little update, I ended up replacing the master cylinder too and that really had an improvement on the braking as well.

Fast forward to this weekend, I was on a pretty rutted south Florida highway and caught one pretty good, immediately lost about 70% braking power. Upon inspection today, I found that one of the brand new "Carlson Pro" drum adjuster assemblies sheared clean in half.
