Should I save this fx4?


Unfortunately this truck has hit the end of the line. I was collecting parts to put this Humpty Dumpty back together … but as luck would have it, my buddy happened to be selling his moms 05 fx4 off-road that’s having transmission issues. Well I bought the 05 today and the plan is to try to repair the auto that’s in it and run it till summer. Once summer hits, I plan to rebuild the manual transmission and transfer case from the old truck and make the 05 twin stick. At any rate, the old truck will be getting parted out 🤘🏽
The 05 has a nicer body and the engine runs fantastic and the interior is dark gray and in good shape.

That may be an FX4 but it isn't the same kinda FX4 as the original one in this thread.

I would swap the rear axle and front diff too...

True, I do plan to swap out just about everything from one to the other. I wouldn’t be doing it if the other one had a clean title and was in better shape.

One question I have and I’m sure it’s been answered before. Which rangers (fx4 off-road/level2) had the torsen and all the other goodies…. This parts truck I have has the chrome hooks, twin sticks, skid plate etc…. Without popping the diff cover off, is there a way to tell if it’s the torsen?
 
It will also have larger diameter axle tubes than yiue new FX4
 
Gonna start pulling her apart. We are going to make my son’s 05 into the twin stick. Got it pulled around to the front of the shop after fighting the PATS system. Changed the halo and she fired up. Got the front bumper off, pulling the chrome hooks off for garage decor lol The trans and transfer case work perfectly so we are going to clean and power wash them and paint em. Got the clutch ordered and pedals all ready to be installed etc…
We originally wanted to see if the auto that’s in the 05 was salvageable…. It is definitely NOT.
We found a HUGE crack in the body of the transmission and it’s not worth fixing. So swapping it is the only option.

Hey not to hijack this thread, but I have this Ranger in my yard and reading through your thread and then the TRS FX4 thread posted in here last night I was like, hey I have a Ranger with cool shifters too. What do you fellas think I have here? It’s got the tow hooks, twin chrome shifters, red inset seats, missing alcoas and the rear decals though? It won’t start and I have to diagnose what the issue is, but,… Have I been sitting with a unicorn? or just a plain Jane? TIA.

Interesting, you got the "big" 8.8" R7 axle code, it's a limited slip with a 4:10 ratio. Ufta!

Came with a factory block heater too. You betch ya! The wheels look like steel, not forged Alcoas, but if so......The seats could be special order, however the VIN does specify a "XL" trim code.

Does TRS have a VIN decoder? Awesom O, start you own thread on this rig so we can post there. Other than that, nice truck for sure. Must do well off road as is.
 
Either that was an FX4 or someone robbed lots of parts from one, IMO.

Kind of hard to tell …. Worst case scenario, you have some sought after parts. Very good find though.
 
The VIN says it's an XL trim, but I'm not the best at decoding VIN #s.
