should i get this truck?


The 4.6 is IMO one of Fords most polished engines.

They are more or less a car engine and people beat them up for that but give them RPM and they will do just about anything you ask. The 2V has a lot less to go wrong than the 3v's (like cam phasers)

Dad has an '05 Scab with the 4.6 and he loves it.

I just bought an 2004 xlt f150 4.6 auto 4x4 260,000km for $C900.00
Needs shocks and upper a-arms.
 
4.6L 2v is just a great engine period. There really are no cons with it besides V8 gas mileage and a bit of a higher rpm torque curve for a truck application.

Almost every OHC engine has its share of timing assembly parts related issues where they just dont last like an old pushrod engine. The 4.6L 2v will last you just as long as a pushrod. They are just great motors.
 
The old pushrod engines timing chains didn't last forever either, they were just not refined enough to really care. I could almost work the one off my 302 when I refreshed it, whoever had it before me probably didn't know it was that loose. (it was the OEM nylon one)

Of course a new double roller is like $50, line the keyway to the dot and you are done. :D

Dodge was having problems with the tensioner in their pushrod MDS Hemi cars coming apart and exploiting all the downsides of an interference engine... so they ain't bulletproof either.

Keep on top of your oil changes and don't let it get low and a 2v mod motor has few problems with the tensioners.

3 valve 4.6, 5.4, and not as much on the 6.8.

2 valve 4.6 doesn't suffer from that issue.

Only 2 valves do it, the 3vs break off and get stuck in the head when you change them.

It is more to do with engine load than the engine. A V10 in a 3/4 or 1 ton truck gets a lot more pressure to kick out a plug than a 4.6 in a Crown Vic. 5.4 trucks are a little farther down the ladder and then the 4.6 ones. Then you get to cars.

Thanks for catching that. Had that flipped around. A lot of the failures that have come through here were the 5.4L. Haven't had any of the 4.6L in the trucks do that but 4.6L failure is well documented.
 
Actually, the spitting plugs issue is due mainly to the amount of threads that hold the plug, in the 5.4L's case, its only 4 threads. Combine that with the already weaker aluminum threads and improper tightening and its only a matter of time. I just bought a 2000 f150 4x4 lariat with the 5.4 and 174k miles for $500 cause it spit #3. Theres a tool you can get (timesert is the best and recommended by ford) that cuts the neck down opening of the threads, taps new threads, and installs a similar metal insert that has more threads to contact the plug, all without removing the engine or the head. On all mod motors and aluminum headed engines, putting antiseize on the threads of new plugs and even current plugs will help (but not prevent) both the broken plug and plug spitting curse...
