The truck has a 2.3L 4cyl engine with 179000 miles an a 5-speed manual trans. The trucks runs but is having a problem goin over 3000 rpm's. I just put 900 bucks into it to try an fix the problem and thought i had it but it started actin up again. My mechanic told me after a little investigating that it has a bad computer. I bought a new truck and dont have the room for 2 trucks where i live an i dont want to put the money into a computer. My mechanic told me u could get one out of a junk yard cheap or buy a new one. This truck has been in the family for 12 years and has been a really good truck and have never had any problems with it till now. It has alot of new parts on it within the past 3 years. Here is a list of what i just did to it to try an get the rpm's up over 3000.

- new fuel injector on 2nd cyl
- new fuel filter
- new coil packs
- new sprk plugs and wires
- new tps ( throttle position sensor )
- new crank sensor
- new mass air flow sensor
- new timing belt

All those parts are what just cost me $900. There is alot of other new parts on but to much to list. This truck would make a really good truck if someone wants to put the money for the computer into it. The truck is worth 800 as it sits now, it still runs and drives so you could drive it home.

Do you think this would be a good buy? i might be able to get the truck for 600 bucks i mean there doesnt appear to be any rust on it but i dont want to buy a truck with a bad engine?

should i try it

what could this problem be?

worth a try, i sold my 2.3 with 245,000 miles on it. she never left me stranded. only sold becasue i wanted a 4x4. any pictures?

i just dont want to get it and find out its like a blown engine or something.. i mean the thing appears to have no rust!

true, and i really cant say much with out looking at the rig. its worth a look. i havent seen to many 3rd gen 2.3l 4x4s. buy it then swap in a 2.3l turbo from a turbo thunderbird coupe, it will bolt in to the motor mounts and the tranny, but you have to wire it.

its a 96 xl 4x4, no codes i dont believe

$600 is cheap forthat truck. Doa fuel pressure test. ECU do go bad but not often.

Just a shot in the dark, but do a manual oil pressure test. My truck was having rpm issues and it turned out to be the lifters not bulding up enough.

That is exactly like my Ranger, except mines got 20k more miles.

For $600 its probably worth it. Find a cheap 4.0 Ranger/Explorer, swap the engine into it. That's whats on the agenda for my truck.
