I know the 4.0 and auto's are known to have problems with the transmission failing prematurely. Should this scare me away on a truck like this?

The 5 speed autos are more durable than the A4LDs in the early trucks. Obviously powerbraking and pulling semi trailers at WOT will kill it, but as a daily driver it will be fine.

i have a 1996 ford ranger with the 4.0 auto tranny and it sucks its on it second tranny. iv had so many problems with the truck i don't know i might just have a lemon

i was in the same position and i held out for a manual and am glad i did. plus u will get slightly better mileage out of a manual

I have not heard of a lot of problems with the more recent 5 speed autos but the earlier model 5r55e's are pretty bad. If they have had a rebuild with the factory up date or an equivilant shift kit your good. You're pretty much safe with anything 2002'ish and on. Mine was a 1999 Ranger 4x4 with the 5r55e. Manuals are good and all but you have almost double to towing capcity with an auto. I've put 15,000 miles on my 5r55e since its rebuild and it shifts quick and firm still. If it a 5r55e make sure it has been rebuilt with a kit. Replacing it with another stock 5r55e, your pretty much better off shooting yourself in the foot.

Yuck! I didn't see that. Pass on that.... atleast get something with some 3.73's. Good catch there.:agree:

I have 3.73's and i REALLY regret not ordering 4.10's. 3.73's are fine if you don't want bigger tires. I got 25mpg completely stock that was 100% highway driving.

Thanks for all the imput guys.

Yeah I talked myself out of it last night and sent the guy an email. If I buying I getting what I want. Now I just have to find it might be awhile :(

Yeh I agree passing on the 3.55s, I have 3.73s and wouldnt go lower. Now also because I have the 5r55e, I will give my input on it. Personally I like this tranny. At 140k my tranny still shifts solid as it did when I got the truck at 65k. My roomate has 155k on her 97 with the 5r55e and it shifts solid as well. I doubt hers was rebuilt, but she bought the truck at 135k so you never know. We both do some towing and she drives much harder than I do. I do fluid/filter changes every 30k which might be overkill, but I think this tranny will outlast the motor.

But it is up to you. I wish it was a 5spd because I miss driving a stick. But as far as reliable, I think it is fine as long as your not running WOT every stoplight...
