shifter works....truck wont move

Help needed!
I have an 1993 Ranger 4x4 w/ 4.0 engine, M5OD-R1 tranny and electronic switch for 4WD that was off when this happened. While driving on the interstate, the truck jerked and a clunk/poof sound was heard. After pulling over, I noticed a little smoke coming up through the shifter in the floor. I tried all gears just to see if any worked.....nothin' including 4th or reverse. The truck jumped a little when I shifted in reverse ....then nothing. The shifter appears to work fine going in all gears, but no go. Towed from that point. Any help would be appreciated.

u-joints first. tranny second. does it do anything
in fourth gear?

no not even 4th....why the smoke coming thru the floor? I'll check u-joints...havent looked under it yet....lol

kinda sounds like you ran er out of fluid.

Did it smell like oil or clutch burning either way yank the tranny/transfer if the ujoints are good did you ty shifting the transfer to low

before pulling the trans pull the tcase and put the tranny in gear and see if you can turn the mainshaft. if you can the tranny is toast

rear end spider gears???? set the parking brake, put it in gear and tool to see if your drive shaft is spinning.
