I got a used 2001 transmissoin replacement. I switched the rear tail section so I could use my speedo.

Im having problem putting my shifter back in. I get it back in with the bushings and springs and all, but it doesnt want to go into any of the gears!

The best I had it was going into 1st , 2nd, 5th, and reverse good, but it wouildnt shift it into 3rd and 4th. The shifter wouild move almost all the way to my dash for 3rd and all the way to my center counsel for 4th.

I'm pretty sure the tranny is good, I'm just having a hell of a time trying to get this shifter back in and selecting all the gears properly. ANy ideas?

find neutral and pull the shifter out and start over. It can't be in right

OK, so I figured more of the problem. So I got gears 1+2 and 5th and R in good. The bottom of the shift lever is slipping on the 3rd 4th selector. Could my shifter be that worn?

If I press down real hard on my shifter and shift, it will go into gear clean and not hit my dash or my cup holders. But if i dont press down it will slep far.

Its hard for me to tell from the drawn picture's of manuals, but here is how I got my shifter setup

1)very top is the 3 bolt cover
2)thin metal round piece with 3 tabs coming out
3)thin metal round spring
4)nylon bushings
5)shifter ball
6)bottom nylon bushing
7)thin metal round spring

I feel like I need something at the top that is thicker to push everything down a little more. Either that or I need a new/stronger spring. Sorry for all the trouble guys, the help is very apreciated

ok, heres what I bet you have going on. You used the entire transmission from the 2001 correct? and you used the stub shaft from the 95, am I right? If so then that is your problem because the stub shaft on the 95 is shorter than that of the 97+ M5ODs so you should use the stub shaft from the 01 if you have it or go get one from a 97+, you will also need the shifter with it because they changed the orientation of the notch for the lock bolt.

DOH! Right on. I thought it would b the same. I'll go back to the salvage yard I got the part from and ask them for that piece. I was trying every variation for like 1 hour. Thanks man.
