Ive been caroosing around this site for a while, and have found many answers to my questions just by using search. I have found something that I cant fix myself!

I have a 1993 Ford Ranger, 2.3l engine, 2WD, M5OD-R1 trans.

My problem:

I took out the four screws which fastens the rubber boot to the top of the trans in the cab. I then used a T35 bit to pull off the three screws which fastens the stick into the trans, and set the stick aside. Looking at the top of the trans, there are two pins on the left and right sides which keeps the stick from swivelling in either direction. One is broken like a chipped tooth, the other is worn down and has issues sitting in the hole. Because of this, I can not really get into first or fifth gears. Reverse is an issue, but I can manage to get it in there without having to apply brute force.

Potential solutions:

Going to any nearby junkyard for these two pins are ruled out. The ones that do have a Ranger, the trans is gone already. One yard told me that I cant just pull out the pins without taking the whole trans, and I asked if I could get a bracket instead, and they just kind of shooed me on. (Lucky for them, I would have tapped these pins out in a heart beat)

Going to a dealer is ruled out. I went to Ford, and they printed me out an exploded view of the entire transmission. Part 7221 on the diagram, with a star next to it. They dont make that part anymore. Since its a Mazda transmission, I tried Mazda as well. No luck.

No parts store has it as far as I know.

My buddy suggested using a lathe to make them using a sort of hardened steel which could be anodized with some kind of salt. I would rather not do this, but if I must, I will.

Any other potential solutions I havent thought of, or maybe someone has a couple pins they could sell me?

Thanks in advance guys.

You would be better off just buying this:

For the price you can't go wrong and odds are some day you'll need the shifter bushings and inner shifter boot. Actually you might need them now. Is your inner shifter boot cracked and slightly leaking fluid? Either way it pays to just buy that whole kit since it comes with everything you need to repair your shifter.

HOLY GRAIL BATMAN!!!!!!

I have been looking for a solution to this problem for a couple months, and have just been taking it easy in the truck. Ive done so much, and to think it was all sitting on ebay motors. /sigh

Im positive the inner boot is not cracked, but Im not sure what that shiny metal ring is for, nor those three black pieces in the middle.

Im going to guess.. the shiny metal ring sits on the bottom, then one of the black rings with grooves, then the pins, then another black ring with grooves, then the black thing on the far right sits on top of all of that?

That's just about right. The three small things in that picture are brand new T30 torx screws. That big ring is what they use instead of the wave washers that are originally in those transmissions. You don't really need to use it. The fact of the matter is that you'll get your pins and have the other stuff for when you need it. Those shifter bushings have a habit of breaking up and falling down inside the transmission so your best bet would be to also use the new bushings in it too as a form of preventative maintenance.

The trans right now doesnt even have bushings. May as well put it all in since its not hard to do.

Waiting for a few items to sell on craigslist, and Im gonna put an order in for this kit. Thanks for the link mate!
