i have a 1987 ranger 2.9 no clue what trans is in it... but when shifting into drive it sometimes jumps and really hard. also sometimes it does not want to shift from 1st to 2nd with out being manualy dropped in into 2... there is a vaccuum line on the trans that is not hooked up... when i hook i up it shifts very smoothly but the vacuum line pulls trans fluid and dumps it into the intake.... does anyone know how i can avoid the fluid being pulled out or replace that piece of the trans?

Sounds like an issue an old girlfriend of mine had with a Mitsubishi. The dealership couldn't figure it out, so she gave the beater to her son.

He checked and someone had way, WAY overfilled the transmission. He drained it, filled it with the correct amount, and that cured everything.

That piece is the vacuum modulator. If it's sucking trans fluid it needs replaced. The vacuum from the engine controls the 1-2 shift. Check any parts store.
