when i am in park my idle is around 2000, but if i am in drive or reverse and on the brake then its at a normal 1000 or so. also, something is going on with my shifting. it is shifting very rough and to get it to shift i need to get it up to like 4000 rpm or more and sometimes it wont shift at all. it wont go into overdrive nomatter what i do. this seemed to all start after a short wheeling trip and more specifically after going through a mud hole. any ideas.

is your CEL or ABS light on?

sounds like you may have damaged the VSS in the rear diff....but start by checking the vehicle over for unplugged/damaged wiring and connectors.

no lights are on and a quick lookover under the hood revealed nothing. what is a VSS?

I would first check very carefully for a vacuum leak. they can cause all kinds of issues similar to the ones you are experiencing.

how do you check for a vacuum leak? do i need any special tools?

So i checked for vacuum leaks everywhere and couldnt find any. finally i found out that my throttle position sensor was broken. fixed that and everything works fine now.
