I found what was probably the main problem...the fuel mixture was too rich and it would not start if the temp dropped below -10 or so...
Then I was testing the coil and found that the ground wire was just barely connected...corrected that and it fired up this morning at -20...

Amazing what a bad ground wire will do to your morning...like cheap ground coffee...
