will having my head shaved mess with my timing?

Well, just don't shave too deeply, or else your intelligence, memory, hearing, vision and motor skills will be affected along with your timing.

j/k No, it shouldn't. The belt tensioner will take up the very tiny extra belt slack. Timing is good as long as the cam matches the crank.

How about a mohawk instead?

:icon_rofl::icon_rofl: see some one tryed telling me that you cant deck or shave sohc engines :icon_twisted: or it will mess up my timing. i looked at it and figerd the tensioner would take up any slack. this is my first ohc or 4 cyl and i wanted some info be for i get the machinest to do it.

is there a way to tell how many degre my timing will retard for every thousants i shave?(i hate ohc:annoyed:)

I don't know on this engine... but if it will effect the timing...
just use an aftermarket gasket that is slightly thicker. Problem solved.

If you use a thicker gasket, you will defeat the purpose of whacking the head.(unless you just need it flat)I,m pretty sure it figures out to be 1 degree retarded for every 10 thousandsts off.You don't have to do anything to put it back to zero as retarding the cam gives you a little more mid-bottom torque. If you do want to keep it at zero or top end,get a adjustable timing gear, about $95

ditto...I had mine shaved and it didn't mess with the timing whatsoever...but, then again, mine is carburated so I can make a bit more adjustment on mine...

Getting it flat or shaving to reduce the combustion chamber (to provide a higher compression ratio???) can usually improve performance and/or simply make things work better because there is less chance for gaps around the gasket...and that roughly translated means it is a good thing...

how much retard can i go with? its a 4x4 so bottom end is allwas good...but dont want the cam degre to efect (lose) compreshion.i would like to know wut the timing specs are on a 88 roller cam.like degre?

You can usually go about seven degrees.Best way to do it,is to get a adjustable gear and set it up stock and just start retarding or advanceing it to suit your purposes.I think when you take a 150 or so off,you can jump a tooth on the belt but thats getting into grinding your intake bolts
