Severe Banging! Tranny? xfer case? or Drive shaft?

I hate to tell you but even though you disconnected the rear driveshaft when you took it into the shop, both back wheels were on the pavement so the gearing in the rear was still spinning. It may have made it worse.

I would just go to a junkyard, a different junkyard and find a complete axle. It's only a few bolts holding it all in there.

They are quite heavy (two people), but not much holds them in. Eight nuts on the U-bolts, four bolts on the driveshaft, two on the shock absorbers, two on the stabilizer bar end links, and a single brake line. Get one just like the one you have (only in better shape), including gear ratio and brakes.

You should have had it towed not only for Jspafford's reason (once it makes noise, though it's probably already hosed even without driving on it more), but because the worst case is to drop an axleshaft on the highway. Not good. You can hose a C-clip or get a nice sharp bit of gear inside the axle bearing.

I know the gears were still spinning, but it stopped making noise after I disconnected it. I figured it was hosed anyway, I didn't want to pay for a tow too. I thought it would be less stress on it if it was drag rolling rather than pushing. I only had to go about 3 miles.

This happened to me, it ended up being one of the spider gear tooth broke and it was wedged in there, once i got it out, it ran fine, but then i welded it, so.....
