I hate to tell you but even though you disconnected the rear driveshaft when you took it into the shop, both back wheels were on the pavement so the gearing in the rear was still spinning. It may have made it worse.
I would just go to a junkyard, a different junkyard and find a complete axle. It's only a few bolts holding it all in there.
