I just installed a new serentine belt and tensioner in my 1997 Ranger 2.3 and noticed the truck now has an uneven idle - sounds like it's trying to die and then the idle comes up a bit.
I looked under the hood and noticed the new tensioner (Dorman brand - Advance Auto) is moving slightly back and forth with the belt and it matches the "stumble" of the idle. I've never really looked at a tensioner in action but I didn't think they should move to where it can be seen while the truck is running. It's not moving much, just enough to see a slight back and forth motion.
Is this normal or do I have a bad tensioner?
I've removed and remounted it twice and still get the same movement. It did not seem to have any movement with the old tensioner (in fact, the old tensioner didn't move much at all when taking off the old belt).
Thanks!
