Selecting an aftermarket electric fan for my Ranger

Here is the BMW sensor on mine. I made an adapter to go from 3/8 npt to an M14 X 1.5 thread.

It starts the low speed at 180 degrees, and then high speed at 195 degrees. It is all in one sensor.

What is this electric fan mod do? Like, what is it exactly, I know there's a fan that can be controlled by a remote or such and that's about it.

any serious wheelin will fawk that relationship up.

I have a Flex a lite 118 or 119 (one is a pusher the other is a puller, I have the pusher) with my V8 swap. It did a fairly decent job of keeping it cool. It struggled when the truck wasn't moving so I added a pulley driven low profile flex fan with an Explorer shroud to the mix when I changed to the 5.0 Explorer FEAD, hardly hear a peep out of the e-fan anymore.

That is on a truck with a HD 4.0 Explorer radiator (which IMO is JUST big enough) and a 5.0 V8. Pushers do not work as good as a puller either, I think mine is rated 2500CFM.

The Taurus fan takes up a lot of real estate in a tight engine bay which is what nixed it from my build. BTW O'Reilly's had the dimensions of different OEM fans on their website if you need to go trolling for an oddball size.

Chances would be nill they would stock a fan let alone a motor, just the motor vs a whole fan would depend how much a new assembly cost.

this is the problem, (not directed at you particularly 85) modification of the core support and relocation of the radiator with a real v8 radiator produce the best results with a v8 swap. .....its that fawking simple.

living within small v6 confines is not ideal. just livable in most cases. many times its not. i never understood the desire to fuk ones self with a stock location and oem 4.0 fan in a v8 swap. it baffles my tiny little mind how this happens so often. i want max cooling when at all possible... but i am retarded that way i guess. most 2wd get by easy though so theres some justification for it i guess. generally theres lucky to be 250 hp with most swaps.

LonesomeSTX, you sure as hell dont need a taurus fan for a normal ranger engine, any of the smaller oem fans from say a dodge minivan or car or jap cars that have single units will work just fine. look around the junkyard for shits sake, everything you will ever need is in there for less then 35-45 bux....ALL OF IT. a whole big yard full of everything you need with great stuff and you just give up on it...:shok:

hell, what is there to it??? you need some heavy gauge wire and some relays, and a fan switch or two, i usually use the fox body 4 cylinder mustang temperature switch units and sometimes rewire a ircm from say a tempo or something to run the fan with one of those.. worst case they are 12-18 bux at the parts store for the fox fan switch.

even a 3 pack relay assembly from an old vic will work ok, i often just pair or triple up the normal relays to run the high current fan/s if i am not using the solid state units.

currently...personally
i use the intech v8 fan on my ranger, its a decent twin unit, not as good as the stock 150 and raptor electric cooling fans but it keeps my 6.5 v8 cool even when smokebombing it in hard low range crawls on occasion in 100 degree heat. once i let out of the smoke pedal it cools in less then a minute.

bad thing about idi...even 100 hp will make a scary amount of heat in short order.

i really am surprised by this topic sometimes.

I get a kick out of Bobby. Hey man, all anyone was doing was steering him away from the cheap POS chinese Ebay units. Taurus, Contour, Cougar XR7, Volvo, any will foot the bill. If you go back and read, you will find that there are other suggestions made as well.

FWIW, this is my fan on high.

its subjective.

the gains are specific and potential. the good, theres no losses with a decent fan and proper installation.

if you use it specifically in a off road environment and want to control it to be off in water crossings etc...thats one benefit. also off road crawling along you will have max cooling all the time...huge bonus depending on terrain. especially with ac.

potentially depending on your drive cycle it can reduce fuel consumption as well and many times its negligible in gains but there are gains no matter. even modern 400 plus hp trucks are cooled that way because of that.

there are no losses really for savvy shoppers that have reached the end of the line with the oem fan.

short of the off roading goals i would not put a e fan on a normal rbv in general with a properly working fan, the stock cooling is pretty overkill as is with a nominal milage penalty.

but do whatever the fawk you want:icon_thumby:

i read every post.

the volvo fan is definitely a nice unit, i played around with many of them, hyundai fans work real good and are compact as well.

dont get me wrong, the taurus type is a great way to go, it will keep the ac cool for damn sure.

that's the way I feel about the stock fan vs e-fan...
my 2wd 93 explorer will NEVER get an e-fan.. it's fine with the stock fan, it does everything I need it to do...
my 4wd 88 B2 4.0 etc... will get an e-fan b/c on long hill climbs in 4lo, it overheats... I need more airflow (High of Taurus fan will fix this..)

Years ago I had the Flex-a-Lite Black Magic fan, and it sucked horribly. Absolute biggest POS I've ever bought for it. I wanted to use a factory piece. Almost used the Contour fan, but it was going to be an ordeal to pull it, and I wasn't in the mood. The Taurus fan takes about 2 minutes to pull.

I actually looked pretty close at the Volvo fans I pulled my my controllers from. They look pretty dang similar to the Taurus fan. I think about any OEM fan will work fine for an RBV motor unless you wheel. Then I would get something like the Taurus fan.

If this works out good, I am going to some up with something for my F150. I'd love to get a more MPG's out of that thing.

well i put the stock mechanical fan on my ranger its diesel came with just to test it....on a few different occasions.

i had to leave the hood up a bit so it was cheating a little for it for air to go out of the top, but the shroud i made wasnt the best so i call it even.

locally, i could go over mallory hill in low dig with the e fan at @ 235 degrees, which is pretty hot. if i had to back up a few times it would touch 260

with the mechanical fan it was pegged at 260 2/3rds of the way up and off the chart blowing shit out of the expansion chamber when i got to the top....and all but refused to come down below 235 for almost for more then 4 minutes in park with the idle raised.

that told me all i needed to know.

BUT. often on long trips i take it with me in case i lose power. in traffic or going slow off road that is a killer downfall of e fans. then again extra alternator aint hard to keep either.

nice thing about a mechanical diesel...worst to worst electricity is an option. might have to tie open the fuel solo but in an emergency its a small price to pay.

just use stock 150 fans...to properly control them could get pricey but they are nice. we were at the dunes in a raptor a few years back in july and i was pretty impressed how well they worked.

getting an intech fan like i been using is a pia with a unmolested car. but they have a good motor setup, and i can put two thin motors in them easy enough as well.
