My oldest son and I got the chance to test drive the new Ranger this weekend at the Seattle Auto Show. After that, we did the same with the TRD Tacoma and the ZR2 Colorado. The new Ranger is everything I expected and more. The turbo 2.3 and 10 speed trans has plenty of pull. The word is that there is a performance version done as well but being held to see what the market does once the Ranger hits the dealerships. I was told that they aren't using the Raptor name so it can be "it's own thing". As much as I liked the new Lariat trim FX4, I'm waiting on the Bronco.

Yes, by the looks of it there was quite a bit in that BB code that was not needed.

you did not find the trans shifting vague in city traffic?

slow throttle application? braking?

thanks for reporting.:icon_thumby:

Thanks for the assist Gentlemen. Super new to FLICKR.

I'd say you'd be hard pressed to feel the shifting even under hard throttle up to 60 which we both did a couple times. There's a ramp entrance with a bypass to go around Safeco Field we hit on our laps. It was a huge difference going from my '06 FX4 with the 5R to the 10 speed. It acts like a CVT.

Braking was pretty solid with 3 big guys in the cab and empty bed. I'm 6'5", my son is over 6 foot and we're both husky for our height. I was immediately comfortable in the new truck as it felt familiar to the seating position on my '06. It did have better head room up front though. Sitting in the back wasn't too bad either.

Throttle response is what got me right away. The truck was a Lariat FX4 with rear locking diff and 3.73s. Not that any factory Ranger is a rocketship but I'm certain my FX4 with headers, tuner and 4.11s would lose to the 2.3 turbo. The turbo made itself known very quickly and it just kept pulling which prompted the braking test.

Dang, that sounds positive.

That is one thing I don't like about one of the other major competitors... seating position is very weird for taller people.

The ZR2 we test drove after had 6 way power and the Lariat the 8 way but it's the ridiculously wide console in the ZR2 that screws it.

It's always been the head room in my '06 so I have to lean waaay back.

Thanks for the report on your drive experience. Now that these drive events are starting to happen across the country and people are starting to drive this new truck I'm interested to hear their opinions and reports. So far I've not heard too many negative things about this truck that can't be summed up as one person's opinion. I'm even more eager hear about ownership reports once it starts getting into customers' hands out in the real world.
Unfortunately none of these drive events are coming anywhere close to me. I think the closest one is about 600 miles away. I'll have to wait until Spring when it lands in dealers to schedule my own drive. I'm curious to see how much space is available in the back of a Supercab.

Quick question--- Does the Lariat have a tach ? Possibly as a switchable screen ?? Thanks !!!

Yes, the Lariat has a digital tach on the left screen if you set it to show it.

Who and where did you hear negative things ? Nobody owns one yet. BS.

theres dozens of them that get driven home from work everyday near the tempe proving grounds and metro detroit to lansing the last three weeks.

theres a few companies that have had platforms that they have been developing parts for and racing since spring. more then 10 rigs.

not gonna say theres not being any negative things being thrown around though.

as there is....and will be issues to sort for sure.
