seats reclining

in my 88 ranger when i put pressure on my seat it just reclines all the way back and it will not stay up what could be the problem i have looked at the latch to see if it was bad and i dont know if it was or not

Had a problem like that in an old car my mother had.
Just jammed a 2x4 against it to keep the seat forward.
But then again, thats another one of those unsafe "redneck" fixes.

Once they're gone, they're gone...seats are fairly inexpensive at the junkyard...or you can put the passenger seat in the driver's seat spot...had to do that once when I couldn't find the seat I wanted...but it's a PITA trying to adjust it if you have a centre console...
