sd 33t Nissan diesel

A sd 33t Nissan diesel i have one that i am thinking of putting in my ranger. thay came in cj-10a's and scouts in the late 70's and till 85 ish in a N/A. the one i have is a turbo one from a Nissan forklift. they use a TF-727 in the cj and the scout had a t19 trans. i am thinking of putting it in my truck because the 6bt is to much work to make it fit and the sd33 will not need body mods to make it work.

a forklift? haha thats awesome that your putting a forklift engine in your ranger!!! thats definately original. post pics during the swap! and as far as a 6bt, thats the motor they put in dodge pickups right? as the cummins? if so, yeah that would take alot fo work to fit, its not exactly a small motor. ive seen a 4bt put into a bronco II though, it fit rather well

ya the 6bt is the I6 cummins and i have seen them in rangers just dont what to do body mods.

The Mopar A-727 "Torqueflight" trans is probably the best automatic transmission ever made by anyone anywhere.

that transmission was designed for the Big Block mopar engines
including the 440 and the original 426hemi

And even on those breakage wasn't a problem, so just what
exactly would you expect to have happen with a 3.3liter turbo diesel?

THE issue with a 727TF is getting a t-case you want to run behind it.

You're not going to crank up the power on those either 110 HP (turbo version) out of the box and only 4 main bearings. YES, 4 (four). It's still got a super heavy duty forged crank in it, but I would never recommend over 150/160HP and 24-/250 lbft of torque. Easily handled by a stock automatic, and plenty driveable. That's pushrod 4.0L territory.

ive seen far more 727 failures than c6 and th400 combined. the only credit i will give it is that it was a VERY smooth shifting trans back in it's day.

however, as far as durability is concerned, its simply not in the same league as a c6 or th400. (im not saying the little diesel will be too much, but theres better options out there, thats my point)

Obviously your experience differs from mine.

and though I don't often admit it LONG AGO I was a "dodge guy"
but those days ended while Chrysler was still making cars with
Slant 6 engines.

The TH400 was ultra sensitive about input alignment, you HAD to verify
that the engine was dowled correctly when switching engine or trans.

The C6 was sensitive to kickdown link adjustment (but not as much so as
the early AOD)

My issues with the C6 largely ammounted to constantly chasing oil leaks
inside the bellhousing constant problems with front pump seals...
I've advised people that if they have a leak aquire a new case.

If this conversation is brought up in the future for someone to ask me an auto trans question I'll deny it and be forced to kill them to avoid people asking me auto trans questions.

Be warned.

But the only auto trans missions I miss are the 727 I swapped into my brothers
'68 Coronet Hardtop and the FMX I swapped into my '69 Mustang.

the FMX is the REAL "parent" of the AOD, not the C4

The 727 IS a great tranny. It typically outlasts the 413 and 440 engines it backs up in Dodge MH chassis.

I have had 727s, C6s and TH400s in various and numerous vehicles. The only failure I have had is 2 with 727s. On my '74 360 Duster the flexplate broke and on a '74 New Yorker with a 400 the low-reverse band broke. I had one in my '71 Winnebago and it was behind a 240hp engine pushing a 10,000# box down the road at full bore without a wimper all the time. Most 60s-70s RV were Dodges and the 727 was in all of them and rarely failed.

I had a C6 in my 472" 460 powered '64 Galaxie and in the 351C 4V before that. No problems. I have had a TH400 in front of me since a small boy--'71 and '74 and '76 Pontiacs from highschool to age 21 and in CUCV and HMMWVs in the service and then behind the turbocharged diesel in my truck since 2004 (700R4 before that). I don't think failure is possible with a TH400. Of the old three big autos the TH400 is my favorite, but the 727 is no slouch.

TH-400 is an absolute beast IMO, I even like the th-350 (shorties, very convenient)

I have seen a ton of 727's fail......... but that's behind modded 6bt's with the old ve fuel pumps. nothing will stand up to the torque of an angry 6bt spraying water/methanol pushing 60psi of boost though. hehe (yes it's true I was a hardcore dodge man back in the day.... sled-pulling the dually)

Well o sold the sd33t to a friend that will go in his samie buggy, and got a 4bt for the ranger that will get a zf 5 or 6 for a trans with a stak box.

Go on youtube and look up the 4bt in rangers, they are sweet.
