Scott B.'s Sleeping Platform Build

It fits!

This picture was taken before the carpet was cut/modified.

Nice build, although I would have made the back half a slide out/pull out storage bin. Looks great!

SVT

I though a lot about doing this. While a pull-out is super convenient, you loose some storage space due to the drawer structure.

Sure, not very much, but there is not a lot of room under there to begin with. Being that is only about 3 feet deep, reaching in to grab something is not that difficult.

What would be nice is a full-length drawer. To get to things stored in the forward compartments, if anything is on the platform, it has to be moved. Kind of a pain in the butt if the truck is packed for a week. Unfortunately, I have gotten very good at loading and unloading the back of the truck...

Wow man, nice looking setup.

Post up a pic of your loaded truck with your sleeping mattress/ mat and sleeping bag in the sleeping position. Very nice!

Very nice...

I did something similar when I first got my Ranger. Built a similar sleeping platform above the wheel wells and insulated the cap with pipe wrap (aluminum bubble wrap)...then I decided I wanted to cut the back wall out so I didn't have to open the back end and could crawl right through...

Hypothetically, this was a good idea...in reality, it's really hard to heat that space in the winter so I was going to put a door of sorts before I found the cab was rusted beyond my capabilities at the time...

Only thing I would do differently in your case is maybe get a riser cab that allows more head room...nothing like waking up and sitting up only to bang your head on the cap...which I managed to do a few times even with a riser cab (the back end is about a foot higher than the front).

Good work on the carpet and compartments!

I did a very basic version of what you have, I did full length pull out drawers. ply wood top and bottom with a 2X6 side and a divider. The drawers are 1X6 sides with a ply wood bottom. The top is just wide enough to slide in through the tail gate opening. I used role on bed liner from Lowes to paint it. If I could post a picture I would, but for some reason I can't seem to post pics.

I wanted to do something like yours, but I am just not that good with a saw and a tape measure.

Looks nice. I like the full-length drawers.

If you haven't yet, use paste wax (for furniture - such as Johnson's) on the drawer sides and bottoms and the floor under the drawers. The wax will allow the wood to slide easier.

Cool, thanks for the advise. I am not much of a wood worker. And ya those drawers get heavy when they are loaded.
