I was checking how low my funds were online when I clicked on the detailed version of my checking account I saw 3 transactions that weren't mine! I immediately called one of the companies where a very nice woman verified someone used my check card numbers to try and open an account, she said that there security caught it and stopped them. I then called my bank and canceled my card. All in all they charged $1.06 because they were only test withdrawals by websites (a weight loss site, a consultant site in France, and a paypal like site in London). Just goes to show that this can happen to anyone because I ONLY shop on SECURE sites. Scary how this can happen when no one even stole my card, guess I lucked out though with only just over a dollar taken.

They probably just picked random numbers until one worked. Unfortunatly, yours was the one that worked. Glad you caught it!

alot of times the transfer of the number from user to site is safe through encryption. what is unsafe, is how the sales site stores credit card info. you may have been a victim of a site that has its own computer compromise. once they have your number you are really dependent on how they treat and store you number.

My wife's account got nailed for about $500 a few months back. Her bank recognized that it was from a local banks computer being compromised and called her to verify what was going on. Many people that used the ATM at that same bank that got compromised got hit. In the end, she had to sign some paperwork saying she wasn't charging anything from I forget what country overseas and they refunded the money taken.

Once you give your CC info out, anyone can get it. I deliver pizza and could have a whole book with CC info If I wanted. People call in an pay with there cards, all that info gets written down on the order tickets and its open for anyone to look at. Luckily I'm a honest guy and always rip the tickets in half and toss them after my delivers. But still everyone else still has access to it, and thats only at one restaurant, just think of everywhere else you use your card.

A few years ago my m others SSN was being used by a mexican guy in California. He tried to open a Radio Shack charge account and they called her. They had all the info on the guy and he is still walking around free today. He never charged anything or cost her any money, but it could have been a lot worse. The thing with my mother is she, don't use the internet, at all. the only thing we figured was he just picked the numbers and they worked.
Its getting scary out there with the ID theft.......

Working in the factories around here you see a lot of illegals. I have always though it would be hilarious to see them get the SSN of someone who owes tons of back child support and see them wonder why their check was only $50 for a whole weeks worth of work, lol.
