I was out beating up my ranger last night. Decided to run it out, 1-2 shift great, tire squeal. 2-3 shift, well, somehow dont know how it ended up being a 2-1 downshift at 65 mph and boy did that ol' 4.0 hit about 8 grand fast! First time ever doing something dumb like that! The amazing thing is that it lived, so far no problem at all. I was really pissed off the rest of the night while driving like it was Sunday the rest of the way home! Anything like this ever happen to anyone else? No bs, somehow it made it back into 1st amidst a brief loud gear clash. Damn it!!

it happens to all of us at some point...and nothing makes you feel dumber faster.

i had had my truck for about a month at the time. following someone doing 55 in the 65. trying to quickly downshift from 5th to 3rd to pass and somehow found 1st instead. the old 3.0 protested so hard that the rear tires broke free...which is probably what saved me from pegging the tach.

you can redline these motors once or twice..but i would count my blessings after that. valve springs take a beating at those RPMs.

I have never done it my truck becuase it is an auto but I have done it more than once on my bike. When I really go to run it out I have missed the shift from 1-2 and she goes past the 10,000 RPM redline. I feel like a complete idiot dead reving a bike to 10 or 11,000 RPM. But it happens.

I did that once when I first got the B2. I was still a newbie and went to downshift from 4th to 3rd and ended up in first. I got the clutch about halfway out and noticed how fast I was slowing down, so I pushed it back in before it revved much past 6K..

Your right, you feel like an idiot and then for some reason your instincts tells you to drive like a grandma for the rest of the trip.. I dunno why.

I did it once myself, but i was riding three wide across the front seat, which were the bucket lumbar seats so i really had no room to shift. I was more worried about blowing the tranny apart or rear end, never the motor. I have yet to blow one up and Ive owned two. I certainly wouldn't red line it every single time I get in the truck, but you gotta blow the cob webs out every now and again, wont hurt it. the 4.0 at least

Yea, I dont plan on doing that anymore. You know, that Mazda transmission is pretty tough! I cant count the number of times that I have clashed the gears and its still ok. I dont think it can take much more, though.

Yeah, I did it once. I was driving my Dad's truck, shifter was so sloppy that you kind of aimed for a general area to shift... Anyway, I did a 4-1 shift, ended up breaking the rear tires loose. Boy did it slow down in a hurry. Sure makes you hope nobody was looking at the time

i havent done it with my mazda yet. but when i got my license last year it was my 5th day driving my 89 camaro with a 2.8 v6 and an automatic i was going 100 and my friend was saying to go faster so i floored it and caused the tranny to downshift and those rpms flew well past 7 grand then i was driving later that night and i had a knock that completly destroyed the engine.
