Just found this great site and wanted to chime in. I've owned 3 rangers over the past years and I do like them. I had an 88 2w, 2001 4x4 flareside, and now I just bought a 92 4x4 automatic it has the 2.9 v6 . It does have issues and hopefully I can find help on here to guide me through getting it up and going.

I just bought this ranger and don't know anything about it. For no more than I have in it, if necessary, I can part it out and get my money back.

It starts ok, but hard to get to idle. Then when I put it in gear (reverse or forward) it jerks might be because I have to hold the gas down a bit to keep it from dying. Then I ease off the gas to put in in forward and it most times dies. I restart easily enough and kinda hold the gas down as I shift into drive. When it shifts from 1st into 2nd it jerks again...but doesn't when the other gears shift.

I plan on changing spark plugs, but from there I'm at a loss of where to begin. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome yo. Where in KY you at?

welcome to TRS....

as Dustin said, where ya from???

idle issue could be vac. hose related....or bad gas...or plug wires....you get the idea....:D

start with the simple inexpensive stuff....bein fuel injected i doubt its computer or anything too overly complicated related....:icon_thumby:

get her runnin and we'll go wheelin soon...

around Whitley City????

anyways, i know pretty much exactly where ya live....:icon_rofl:

i was born in Somerset, and all my family is in the McCreary, Pulaski, and Laurel Counties area....

again, good luck on the idle issue....

hello welcome. First off I would check compression and vacuum to get an idea on the health of the engine. +1 on the basics a good tune up plugs, wires, pcv, filters and fluids. Check the wiring and vacuum lines for anything obvious get it up to temp clear the codes and memory and pull the codes while the engine is up to temp. Then you can start troubleshooting. You never know how someone else did the PM plug wires and pcv are the most overlooked part of preventative maintenance.

Railman....whitley city here for sure....didn't mention it as I wouldn't have thought anyone would know this rinky dink hole...LOL Just a wide spot beside the road.

kimcrwbr1... I dont know how to check compression nor vacuum. And the code thing....just as well be talking greek or something...LOL I"m barely a shadetree mechanic...I got a few wrenches and can change plugs and oil...thats about the limit of my knowledge.

However...I did just change the plugs and the old ones looked ok??? No gunk around the gap. The ceramic thing around the gap was clean. Just a little bit of black powdery stuff around the metal, inside of where the threads are. There was 2 that had very slight white stuff on the gap thingy. Dont know what that means tho. Anyhows....after changing....the engine seems to run a bit better...it will start and run without having to give it gas. Although it does idle up and down for about a minute..then it runs fine. I'm not mechanic...but it purrs like a kitten after it quits the idle stuff. I don't hear any noise like a knock or pings or stuff...but there again...I'm deaf in one ear and cant hear out of the other...so....nuff said....lol This EFI stuff just is beyond me. Now, give me a 2.0 carb engine...and I can work on them. I've rebuilt 4 myself. All in the 88 I use to have. They were pieces of junk...but I knew how to work on em!

it's the river valley about 5 miles up river from Cumberland Falls.....

I haven't been to ball bottoms in years. A lot of the "old" river roads and trails are closed now or have been graveled or blacktopped. Used to be a bunch around here ride around over there. Most have gotten older and the younger ones have went different paths. Me, I never purposely went "muddin", but going to the deer/turkey woods or fishin hole I've had to lock the hubs in a few times. Lot of deer over your way railman? Always lookin for another deer hole...LOL

there are tons of deer over here...

as for the Bottoms, last time i was in, me and the Bro-in-law went down to the cabin and noticed that the Forest Service had re-opened certain trails and had OHV signs posted....so i intend to bring my truck to check out what all has been re-opened...

Welcome to the site. Lots of good info and plenty of people willing to help ya out. Hope you get the truck fixed.

As far as your truck goes, check the throttle body (very similar to a carb, just without all the adjusting screws and jets). You may have an injector suck closed or clogged. Sounds like a vaccum leak to me though.
