Saw a dude that got shot today....

About the gun debate.....

I believe that firearms need to be legal but only with proper training. I live near Eastern KY and it really bugs me seeing drunk crazy red necks driving around with sawed off shot guns looking for deer to shoot at. I had to do a big research project for one of my classes on this and I found that countries that have gun bands experienced an increase in violent crime involving fire arms after the ban was passed. About taking nonlethal shots, most police academies and self defense classes teach to always take lethal shots. There are two reasons for this. One, most perpetrators are very close when lethal action is needed, like within 10 feet, taking nonlethal shots might not stop them before they reach you with a knife. They might also be on drugs or simply hyped up on anger and not stop at pain, taking a lethal shot (upper chest) stops the blood and oxygen flow and drops them right away. Its also very hard to take an accurate shot when placed under that kind of stress, its much easier to take a lethal shot then say a leg shot. The second reason is sadly that dead people have a hard time suing you.

About the suggestions for using material arts; it doesn't matter how much jujitsu you know, you still cannot jujitsu your way around flying bullets and stop someone armed with a firearm 20 feet away. I think material arts are great to learn, but they are useless with an armed attacker you cannot reach. Lastly, even if a gun ban were passed, it would only effect the law abiding citizens, there would be millions of guns floating around, it would be free and open to criminals to use against the unarmed law abiders.

I will now get off my pulpit.

Buggyman,

I'm not sure if your post was aimed at what I posted, but it seems like I'm the only one who mentioned martial arts so clarification may be needed.

I was not implying that knowing martial arts is a way around owning a gun or 'better'. I live in Canada where owning a gun is a right also, but we are essentially forbidden to carry like people in the US. I would agree totally that knowing martial arts may or may not help in a situation where the assailant is more than a few feet away.

However, having said that, I have trained and taught martial arts for over 20 years and I have also taught many police officers. One of my students went on to become the head instructor for the SWAT team in Toronto and was very good at disarming people with guns, knives, and any item that can be used as a weapon.

It is common knowledge by anyone who knows anything about self defence that disarming someone with a gun is extremely risky and should only be attempted if the assailant is less than five feet from you...and ONLY if you are superfast and can get in before they realize what you're doing...and that takes years of training...or pure dumb luck.

I have never had to disarm anyone in a "real" situation but my friend has many times in the line of duty. In fact, I can honestly say that I've never actually been in a 'real' fight since I started training. I have practiced for many countless hours on how to defend against numerous weapons (and numerous attackers) including guns. I DO NOT feel confident that I could disarm someone in any given situation, but if the opportunity arose I'd certainly give it a shot if needed.

The main point of my post was that, although I don't own a gun, people should have the right to do whatever they feel necessary (within reason) to protect themselves up to and including owning one or several weapons.

And if someone tried to remove that right I'd be one of the first to speak out.

Hope that clarifies...and don't take offence...take DEFENCE!

#1 Guns don't kill people, people kill people.
#2 Criminals will ALWAYS have access to guns, so law abiding, responsible & course trained (or military vets) US Citizans should have the right to have and carry them as well, if they so choose.
#3 If you have one along with a CCW, only you, your family and closest of friends should know you have it. It should NEVER be shown in public or pulled unless you plan to defend yourself or your family with deadly force.

And last but not least, I respect anyones opinion to not own/carry a weapon for your reasons and would hope that you in turn would respect those of us who choose to own/carry a weapon for our reasons. After all, when was the last time you saw a story in the news about a licensed CCW holder breaking the law with his/her weapon or shooting an innocent person?

i try to stay out of the gun debates because everyone is entitled to their own opinions and all, but this thought:

always confuses me. many people think like this. So, you can take your gun out of your holster, takes the safety off, put a bullet in the chamber, cock it, (assuming you took all these precautions) point it at your target and shoot before they pull the trigger?

I have a hammerless snub nose .38 S&W. Technically it has 5 in the chamber. It has no safety (other than a 10lb trigger pull) and conceals easy in the front pocket of my pants. If my hand is in my pocket, it takes about 1 second to pull and fire. Id say thats a better chance than not having one.

I try to stay out of situations like that.
When I was younger I saw a lot of bad stuff, I saw people die, I saw people beaten so badly they wished they were dead. I've disarmed a few. I have no Formal Marshall arts training and, I'm not a big guy.
I guess I'm lucky to be here, I think I would have been far better off to not be there in the first place.
I'm against gun laws 100% but, There should be a law against stupid people owning guns. You know, not a police law but, a common law type thing.
