Still not able to keep the truck running...removed and resealed the carb gaskets and checked for any vac leaks that I might have missed...

The truck did run a bit better but won't stay running once I open the choke...so...as someone had mentioned this and I didn't suspect it, the fuel pump...

Can a pump that is not maintaining the 5.5 - 9 PSI cause this to happen?

I did notice that the last time I drained the tank the gas was coming out in a trickle as opposed to a stream...and it almost seems like once I open the choke the engine is starved for gas...if I press the accelerator on the carb it will rev up (meaning it is getting gas flow) but dies as soon as I stop moving the accelerator...

TIA

Have you tried retuning the idle fuel flow on the carb, could be too slow. My lawnmower had that problem last weekend. Just a thought.

mark, hook the pump up to a can of gas with a length of fuel hose.sounds like you are on to something.

Sorry, tried that and it turned out that I was using a wider hose to extend it into the gas can...so the flow from the smaller hose turned out to be just fine...

Still thinking it's the carb...but I might try advancing/retarding the cam timing a bit to see if that makes a difference...I did a good P&P on the head before it was rebuilt and they shaved it also so I'd imagine it's going to be a bit more ponies than original...

Thanks for the ideas though...

Kelly88: There are two (just found the second one) adjustments on this 5200 carb...the one at the back I never adjusted before but I may have screwed it in thinking it was plugging a hole...I undid it all the way and it turned out to be a secondary fuel mixture screw...the engine does rev higher when this is farther open and dies when it is fully closed...but when I set it up to higher idle and open the butterfly (I'm propping it closed to start the engine then tinkering with the settings) it dies within a few seconds...I've also tried full lean - ¼ to ½ turn with the same results...and fully open/fully closed using the front side adjustment...

Looks like the carb is somehow not allowing proper fuel flow in a fully open (not choked) setting...

I'm going out to try adjusting timing...but may have to wait for the weekend since I'm in the middle of studying right now...
