same noise

I have a 98 ranger witha 4.0l as well. Its got 140,000 on it now and i got it with 24,000. I have maintained it meticulouslly oil changes the whole nine, the same dam noise has been in my truck since about 45,000. I was told by a buddy of mine at a dealer that it was in the exhaust butttttttttttttt im not so sure of that one.

Do a search on "Primary Timing Chain rattle" and see if those symptoms fit your noise.

I suggest Google and maybe add Ford 4.0 to narrow it down some.
