ruptured gas tank

as i speak liquid gold is pouring from underneath my 83 ranger...i cant tell where its coming from...but i do know i was very embarrased at the gas station haha...so i was wondering what my best option is to fix this problem, i doubt its the filler neck cause its been leaking for the better part of 30 mins..where would i buy a new tank at?!? or should i do a fuel cell?? any help would be greatly appreciated-Ramm

Is it coming from the top of the tank? Is it only pouring when the key is on? Need to find the source, otherwise, who knows?

Step 1: Get a funnel and a gas can under there and save as much as you can.

Here's what I found, a LONG time ago on my 83.

Tank is steel. Straps are steel with "supposedly" a rubber liner on the straps. Rubber liner was MIA in many spots. Straps chafed pinholes in the tank, which grew.

If that is what you find, do as I did (cheap). Drive one side of the truck up on ramps to pool the fuel away from the leak. Buy fuel tank sealant (it should be a two part paste you have to mix) and apply it pretty thin, several coats, let dry in between. I basically glued and encased my straps with that crap; no leaks. Obviously, you have to loosen/remove one strap at a time to do this correctly and the surface must be dry.

If you can't find the tank sealer, go on line and google "MIL-S-8802". That's about the best you can get. Note that it comes in several cure rates, anywhere from 1/2 hour tacky, to 24 hour. Your preference. There's also a product called Pro-Seal = same stuff.

from the top, its a hole cause it leaks out when you shake the truck its not the straps, and its toward the front of the truck

I was leaking fuel out of my tank a few months ago.... ended up only being the filler neck. Check that, and the whole tank for holes. The easiest way to inspect the tank is to pull the bed off, you only need two people, and its easier than droping the tank.

thanks man but i think its unrepairable...i checked pulled it out today and it was awful! i reckon im going to purchase a new one and new straps...anyone have suggestions?

the supercab tank is very different.

it takes a very different sender unit, etc...

so...im trying to figure out this sending unit thing??? Where was the one in my tank at? the only thing in there was the float unless that line with it works off suction??? and either way i looked it up on line and the tank is still 114"

83-84 tanks are not a direct interchange with the later trucks because of different fuel systems and sending units.

an '85 Non-EFI fuel sender will allow an '85-up fuel tank to be fitted.

As a note the typical source of fuel leaks from the tnk on '83-88 rangers (the years that used metal tanks isn't rust holes at the straps.

More typically the tank "chaffes" where it is held up against the frame by the "shoulders" of the fuel tank. Rangers Bronco's etc.

The BEST fix is to apply a chunk of Dynamat to the fuel tank
in the spots where it contacts the frame, WHEN you install a NEW fuel tank.

MY "fix" was to switch to plastic tanks.
