I have a 1994 Ranger 4x4 3.0 and It acts like it is straving for fuel when I excellerate, and back fires but eventually will take off and run good no power when pulling hills either

Sounds like you should check timing. I'd start there.

1. Check Timing to see where it is. Should be around 10* BTDC
2. If it's off, loosen 13mm bolt on back of distributor
3. remove spout connector
4. Time it to the above degree, insert spout plug and tighten back down the 13mm bolt.

If timing is good, or even if you have time to kill waiting for a light or something, check the ignition system. Check to make sure the wires are good and that the cap / rotor are OK. In fact, take the cap off and look at the rotor to make sure it's not spinning by hand. It's connected to the distributor / cam gear so you shouldn't be able to spin it with your fingers. If it does, get a new one..It cracked and broke. Been there, done that!

When was the last time it had plugs etc?. Back firing through the intake is fuel staarvation. Backfiring through the exhaust is too rich.
