Running DIS on single coil

My credo
You can never have too many modifications.
Has anyone ever modified the DIS to run on just the right coil? Wondering if it makes any difference in power or econemy? And just what is the purpose of 2 plugs per cylinder anyway?
 
There should be a reference to DUAL PLUG INHIBIT in the wiring diagrams.
