i got a 1988 ford ranger four wheel drive five speed with an 2.9. when i got it it had a cracked head. so i replaced the bad head, and changed both head gaskets, and did a complete tune up. it ran fine for a week. then this morning i went to start it up and it runs like crap. it idles rough and when i drive it it back fires. :annoyed:

Bad gas??

have you changed the fuel filter?? If it sat for length of time and after driving it again may have shook junk loose.

try getting the codes

backfiring makes me think of timing. Have you checked to see if your timing is still right?

thanks i'll check the timing after work today as far as bad gas and fuel filter it sat for maybe 3 or 4 days and i changed the filter when i did the tune up

if bad gas isn't the issue... then yes timing need to be rechecked.
getting codes will help determine what the issue is without just tossing parts at it, saving time, money, and the all important frustration.

the fuel filter could be still plugged...but concidering the time line doubtfull. Others have experienced rapid filter replacement issues. Generally after some long time sitting in wait for repair. or after filling when the station is getting a bulk delivery, stirring sediment as they pump.

ALso recheck grounds and electrical connections. bad ground will make it run pretty funky

Is it back firing out of the exhaust or intake, and how severe is it? A vacuum leak can also cause "popping" and poor performance.

+1 to verify timing (distributor loose?) and checking grounds.

FWIW, the only way you can see a fuel pressure issue is with a fuel pressure gauge.. If there's any pressure at all, there's really no other way..
