Pretty much stock 91 2.9 ext cab. got a noise that just started. Its been snowing here in denver and I have recently used 4wheel drive. sounds kinda like a fishing reel as I accelerate/slow down? I believe it is coming from the front drivers side.

Also when I did use 4wheel a few times after it initially engaged (pulling out of the driveway) I heard a loud clunk and it hesitated for a second. And a few times when at low speeds I made a tight turn causing the truck to shake as if it where catching on something. Any Ideas? I have a manual 5speed and crappy stock hubs if that helps?

Hey also I am looking for any good yards in the Denver area that may have rangers sploders and B2s in them. Or any decent lift parts you may have for sale.

That jerking/jumping sensation happens with 4wd engaged. Just the nature of the beast. Its the worst on high traction surface like asphalt or any roadway. Less in the dirt and mud and all. You can minimize it by turning less sharply.

do you have auto or manual hubs? auto hubs have a reputation for taking a dump when you need them most... does it seem like your front end is pulling like it should be?

If you have automatic locking hubs they are the most likely culprit. The "fishing reel" type noise you describe is what happens when the hubs do not fully disengage. That and the clunking noise probably mean that your hubs are on their way out. For about the same money it would cost to replace the automatic hubs you can get manual ones (don't forget to get the spindle nut conversion kit). You have to get out and turn them but they are much more reliable. If you're driving down the road in 2wd and you hear that fishing reel sound, pull over, put the truck into 4wd and pull forward a few feet to fully engage it. Then put the truck back into 2wd and back up 15 to 20 feet. This process should help the hubs fully disengage. Good Luck. I hope it is just your hubs as they are a fairly easy fix.
