While replacing my PCV (and grommet) I noticed that the old grommet deteriorated and some of the old crumbled rubber is down inside the crankcase. I can feel it, but can't seem to get any out.. is this something to worry about, or do I need to address this, and how
Thanks

No, nothing to worry about, it will be fine.

It is heavier than the oil so will just lay on the top of the head, out of the way, any lighter stuff will wash down the drain holes into the oil pan where they will be drained out on the next oil change.

Well if you can still feel it up top its not in the crank case, it's in the valve train.

Still nothing to worry about. It's going to fall over to the side of the head eventually and just sit there. I had an old 3.8 Nova that did this once, and 6 months later I was able to retrieve it when I did the valve cover gaskets because they were leaking 4 qts out in a week.

One last question.. what's the most appropriate fluid to use to give a little easy sliding.. motor oil... ATF?

ATF has more "slip", it is a high detergent oil, but whatever is handier, oil is slippery too :)

Oil. PCV grommets are not ATF resistant rubber.
