Have a 2003 ranger 4wd ext cab 40 engine and the governor kicks in @3000
Rpm when in neutral, is this correct or should it be higher?
It does run fine and will get up to almost 6000 rpm in 2nd gear on a hill

Ok I found the answer, it is called a rev limiter and is set at 3000rpm
In neutral and park. Could not find the reason for it, I assume
It is to protect the transmission, so you can't drop it in drive
At a high rpm, does this sound right? Anybody know when this
Started?

You are exactly right. It's to avoid high rpm neutral drops into gear, and avoid engine damage from the high rpms.

I would assume they started doing that around 2001, but that's just based on my experience with these trucks, not any factual references.

Rev limiter

Thanks for the reply. I am not sure it is for over reving the engine because
It is not installed in the manual tranny. Why would they let you
Over rev in a manual, and not in an auto.

As far as I know manual also has REV limiter.
Some manuals have a neutral switch at the top by the shifter.
But Limiter can also be active if clutch pedal is in and/or speedometer is below 5MPH

I think the REV Limiter was added to some models with the start of the EEC-V computers, so as early as 1995, not sure when Rangers got it
