rough idle and smoke fuel smell

I have a 1990 Ranger XLT. It was an automatic, until it lost all forward gears. i replaced it with a manual trans. It had ran fine, but now has rough idle, black smoke, and smells badly of fuel all happened overnight. Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated...

Make sure the o2 sensor is hooked up.

Not the o2 sensor hasn't had one since I bought it and ran fine til now fuel pressure regulator is new as well as iac choke sensor and plugs wires and pump and relay

If it hasn't had an o2 sensor for a long time then it has been running on pre-programed "limp home" mode. Finally another sensor is out of range and the computer doesn't know how much fuel to use because it has no o2 sensor. Have you pulled codes yet?

PS; there isn't a "limp home" mode, that's just my personal way of describing the way the computer works when some of the sensors aren't working or are missing.

It was the computer I borrowed one from my friend's truck and runs great. However my friend pushed 4x4 button and now won't come out of 4x4 low. I think it is the computer not matching up with the 4x4 module. If anyone knows for sure I'd appreciate it. Computer is out of 92 push button 4x4
