was given a free 1992 ranger with nice 16'' aluminum wheels which I wanted to put on my 1999 ranger XLT. They fit perfect on rear axle. Won't fit on front rotors because of a step that is on the rotors. Can I take the rotors off the 1992 and install them on the 1999 and if I can ,will the 1999 calipers work or can i put the 1992 calipers on......Help!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe check Rockauto.com and compare part numbers. Or, if you have both trucks, pull the rotors and calipers off both and see if they'll fit.

First, the 1992 and 1999 calipers don't interchange; the 1992 calipers use pins, the 1999 ones use regular bolts to attach it to the steering knuckle. The only way the rotors will interchange is if the bearings, both inner and outer, are the same size. I'd compare bearing sizes--if either sets (i.e., the inners as a set or the outers as a set) don't match, the rotors aren't interchangable. The only other thing you could compare would be the spindles on the steering knuckles--if they don't match, changing rotors won't work.

What do you mean that your 1999 has a "step" on the rotor? If the front rims don't fit, the only explanation I can think of is that the center cap portion of the rims off of the 1992 is smaller than the rims that you're removing from your 1999.

Is your 1999 Ranger a 4WD? Or is it 2WD? And, I would ask the same of the 1992--is it 4WD or 2WD?

zekew64- I'm not sure if this will work in the situation here but i'm thinking he may have the issue i had when i swapped my rear axle into my 97. The center bore of my rims which were from a 97 were about 5mm i think too small to fit over the hub on the rear end. I'm thinking he is having a similar issue but with the front end?

If so would a wheel spacer work? I used them on the rear axle that i put in my truck which was out of a 99 ranger. It let me slide the wheel out just far enough to remedy the issue. This is similar to what i used.

To the OP i'm not sure if this is an idea but maybe try to trade your 92 rims with someone who has 99 rims in similar condition? I'm all for free and using what you get for free but if you can make a trade for something that works easier and better may be worth it.

Hell, if that's the case...I've got some 15s that I'm not going to use, as I'm looking for 16s. The 15s I've got came from a 1st-gen Explorer, so I see no reason why they wouldn't fit.

I thought that at the end of 1997 they swapped over from I-Beam/TTB front ends to IFS. The problem most people run into is that the IFS wheels won't fit over the larger TTB hubs. This is the first time I've heard of the opposite problem ? I know that the rims on the 94 will go on the 2008, but the 2008 won't fit onto the 94 (the ones parked outside). Messing around with your brakes like that could be a recipe for disaster. Free is nice, but if they don't fit, they don't fit. You could end up with some real nice looking wheels on a totalled off truck - just sayin'
