rotational front end clicking

i have a 91 ranger 4x4, 2.9, 5 speed with manual hubs and t case. When i turn left and only when i turn feft there is a rotational clicking sound coming from the left front wheel. It isnt like a grinding or anything, sounds almost like when you get a nail in the tire or a rock in the tread tapping the road with each turn of the wheel. any ideas what it could be?

also, the tires im running are 30x9.5 bfg ta ko's that are more than half worn, but worn evenly across the tread without any knots or anything that i can see or feel when driving

I have the same problem. Your bearings have spun on the spindles and the bearings and spindle need to be replaced.
Try braking really hard. Mine does it when I turn and brake hard. The stress causes the bearings to shift and then rotate on the spindle.
Remove the wheel bearings and look for scorching on the inner bearing surface and spindle. If it's dark, replace. Don't try the method of dinging the spindle to get the bearings to fit tighter, doesn't work and makes it worse.

Most likely the u-joint on the 4x4 axle. once they dry out they go bad and click like a cv joint. turn the wheel and reach in and shake the axle. repalece both sides or you'll be doing it again. did this on my dodge a couple years ago.

the u joint doesnt feel like it has any play in it and besides it does it with the hubs unlocked and doesnt get any better/worse in 4x4 than it is in 2wd

This sounds more likely than a u-joint. I say pull the hub/rotor and check everything over. Then go from there.
