Do I need rolling or sliding cam followers for a 1987 2.3l Ranger engine? Also if someone could help me understand how to tell the difference between the two would be great!

87 followers were sliders. Rollers started being used in late 88. The roller follower will have a round roller in the approximate center, where the sliders were a flat surface.:)shady

Thank you. I have been looking for a used 87 cylinder head, and one of the selections is always roller or sliding cam followers, so I thought the 87 might use either one. I guess this is not the case according to your information.

You can use any cam out of any 2.3 Lima. You have to keep the cam matched to the followers. If it is a roller cam, you must use roller followers.
You can't mix 'em. You also have to re-use your cam sprocket. Can't mix round and square tooth sprockets.:)shady
