Well I have been dealing with a slight lifter tick on start up and lately it has gotten worse but still goes away when it gets warm. Anyway today I decided to tear it apart and check it out and when I took the rockers off I found this (sorry for the big pictures, but I wanted you guys to be able to see the details)

As you can see, all the push rod pockets seem to be worn. Out of the 6 on the one side, only 2 of them had a smooth ring(left one in the first picture, right one in the last picture) And on the other side, all where worn looking. Also, the push rods had some wear on top of them where they ride in the rockers(all but 2 of them)

So, is this the reason for the noise? Am I right in thinking the only 2 of them are good?

Thanks for any input, it is appreciated!

Odometer says 62,000 and I know it has at least rolled over once...so ya lots of miles, but it runs great!

I think I am just going to replace all the rockers and pushrods and hope for the best.

4.0's are a little notorious for this.

I'd just replace them with either of these three: a low mileage set from the j-yard, stock replacements, or deltacam's hardened set (P/N #F40).

yup, they're toast. Replacing them all is worth it as previously mentioned, the 4.0L are notorious for lifter noise. I just replaced them all on an engine I picked up with only 80,000 miles on it. They're a tad pricey though, I believe I paid around 3 bills for rods & rockers.

With the rocker arms mounted, if you can see a gap between lifter arms and the valve tops, that's usually how you know which ones are clicking. Could always be bad valve springs too. Btw I'm thinking about taking my ranger off the road this summer for a month or two and doing an overhaul on my engine as well.

Napa sells the rockers for about $8 a piece and the push rods for about $5. I also saw a remand set on ebay for $100, they are always on there...I might just go that way.
