I have a 94 2wd & im wnting to swap in a good used set of 4.10 gears in my 7.5 rearend. The truck currently has 3.45 gears in it & im going to be running 31x10.50/15 Yokahoma Geolander A/T on it.

Ive never done a r & p swap in these rear ends before, the gear swaps ive done has always been complete carriers, mopar 8 3/4 & ford 9".

I know that the cover needs to be removed & the axle clips removed ,in order to pull the axles.
Im not sure though, does the wheels, drum & backing plate bolts need to be removed also?

Can I just remove the carrier & pinion from the rear end & install different gear set & reinstall & call it good?

This R & P is only temperorary as come summer time I'll be installing a 8.8 rear end that already has 3.73 LS from a 94 Explorer & a dana 35 in the front along with a 5.5 inch superlift kit w/a 1354 manual shift transfer case.

With everything that i have gotten from swap meets & Craigslist, & bone yards this swap from 2wd to 4wd will of cost me less then $700.

Also on the 8.8 rearend theres an electronic sensor attached to the top portion of the front side of the carrier housing. What is it for & is it needed or can it be eliminated?

That is for the ABS, if your truck doesn't have it you don't need it.

It would be easier to swap the whole axle than to swap the gears.
Gears have to be set up to very close tolerances (within a couple thousandths of an inch). If anything's off, it'll likely self-destruct in very short time. Numerous special tools are required as well.

I'd leave it until you swap in the 8.8".

BTW, what engine you have (I'm guessing not the 4.0L)? You may want 4.56 gears, not 4.10s with those 31s.

It currently has the 2.3 L in it ,but eventually ill swap in a 4.0L ,but the conversion will be about a year out.I know that the 3.73 in the 8.8 & D35 will be just ok with the 4 cyl ,but will work out great with the 4.0L, the truck has 3.45 gears in it now & I can make freeway hills wth only having to drop to 4th.
