need to change ratio on a 7.5 , pulling ring and pinion from salvage yard today . my rear housing was shortened so I can't just swap rears. need to change ring and pinion. should I swap out just the gears or can the whole carrier be swapped out. what would be the most eficient way to pull it and reinstall it.

No real easy way on that, you'll need to do a standard-procedure gear swap if you're keeping the original housing.

Reports are the Ford housings are pretty good on their tolerances, so you may come out pretty close when you swap the gears over, but you should still of course check the contact pattern and make sure your bearing preloads are all still correct.

Swapping of the carriers is purely optional.
