When you go up in gear ratio, the ring gear gets thicker and the pinion head becomes smaller. When the ring gear gets too thick, such as with 4.56 and numerically higher gears, the cross pin will not be able to be removed without clearancing 1 or 2 teeth on the ring gear. It is a standard procedure and unless you go to an extremely "jewish" shop it doesnt cost anymore since it only takes a second to do. The spot on the tooth that they remove material from is also a non-load bearing portion of the tooth.

P.S. I appologize for the "jewish" remark, I couldnt think of anything else or remember how to spell it.

thanks, so any brand i get will probably need this modification? Why are these gears so cheap? Ive done a little research and have found they tend to be louder than other brands. What kind of sound will it give off and how loud would it be?

If they are making noise they are not properly set up. And yes any brand will require the clearance.

Genuine gears are cheap for a reason, they aren't manufactured to as tight of tolerances as others like US Gear, FoMoCo, or whatever Yukon sells. They generally have poor tooth contact patterns and is why they are noisier.

would this create any problems? i figure they have to be at least as good as what Ford gave me.

Are there any reasonably priced gears not including Genuine that are good? Precision, Yukon and Richmond are all around the same price about $100-$150 more than the Genuine. am i missing any other brands?

Summitracing has 'em from 3.08:1 to 5.13:1 ratios.

If you want 4.56s, you have three options. Motive Gear, Richmond Gear, or Superior Axle & Gear

the Motive gear states "requires shortened cross shaft" is this an additional part needed? or will the shop just shorten the cross shaft. Damn, they cant ship half of the gears till feburary.

I bought motive's for my rig. Had zero problems setting them up. The shortened cross shaft, again means that the ring gear needs to be clearanced, or you have to run the weaker notched cross shaft.

Yeah don't do anything with the cross shaft, use the original full-round one. Clearance the tip of the ring gear so it slips past, as this won't affect the strength of the diff like a notched pin does.
