Im confused as to what size rims i have. when i measure them they are 15'' but the tires are for a 14'' rim. Is there a certain way to measure or are the tires just for a smaller rim?

If you're measuring from outer mounting lip to outer mounting lip, you may come up with 15". Rims are actually measured from inner lip to inner lip. People screw up measuring width that way too. If you have 14" tires, say a P205/75-14 size, then you have 14" rims.

x2.

I got excited thinking I found a set of 16" rims in an older explorer/ranger style, but then re measured to double check and found out I was doing it wrong. Ended up just buying a pair of ugly miss-matched Dodge Intrepid rims, I'll only use them a few months out of the year anyway.

damn. now i need to find a set of 15'' rims or bigger tires for my 14''

I would look for some used Ranger or Explorer 15's. Not too much available any more in 14", although Sears advertises Michelin truck/suv tires in the 14" size (because that's the cheapest).
