RIght side Overhead Cam

Is it possible to remove this without removing the engine? It is a SOHC, 4.0L, V6, 2001 FOrd Ranger 4x4

Because we need to pull the head and repair the plug threads that got cross threaded. The book says pull the engine but we are wondering if that is really necessary?

Oh sure you can pull it apart without taking the engine out of the chassis.

The problem is you cannot put it back together with the engine in the chassis.

You can't get the timing chains back on and correctly synchronized?

It's A LOT easier to work on an engine on a stand than inside a big steel box with lots of stuff in the way.

There are some tricks to repairing a spark plug without pulling the head, but see the previous sentence. If you crossthreaded a spark plug, you're going to have that much more trouble with an insert. Things get REAL fun when you break a tap in there.

Any chance this is #3 and you have air conditioning? If so, you'll NEVER fix this thing with both the engine and the evaporator installed.

Believe it or not #3 is fine! It is #1 & 2. We have almost everything off the engine now and are just about ready to pull it if we really have to. My friend a mechanic is sending me instructions saying we don't need to pull it, but we will see........

We did start them by hand, we didn't just fall off the turnip truck, not sure what happened

They can't have been started by hand and then become crossthreaded, unless you put the wrong spark plugs in and they have a different thread (kinda hard to imagine -- I've never seen that).

It's not just spark plugs that should be started by hand. Anything with threads.

We did all 6 by hand, the other 4 are fine, so not sure how, or what, or why, of what happened to these 2.

Still trying to figure out if we really gotta pull the engine or not though, that is what this thread is about.
