Hi, I have a 1987 ford ranger 4x4 manual tranny. I currently have my tranny out doing a clutch job, but before that I did not have any back up lights. I need to know how to check the switch on the tranny to make them work or what part I need to make them work

You should have an FM145 trans in an '87 Ranger 4WD

This is a drawing of an FM146: http://www.librum.us/images/mitsubishi.jpg

The reverse light switch should be in the same place.

This switch is just a push button OPEN/CLOSE switch.
One wire will have 12volts when key is on, this power comes from ignition switch and a fuse.
The other wire will run to the Reverse Light bulbs

When you put transmission into Reverse a tab inside the transmission moves to push the button in, closing the switch and the 12volts will go to the Reverse lights.

Switches like these have no "polarity" so wires can be hooked up either way
