On my 86 B2 every time I put the truck in neutral or it passes through neutral when shifting my reverse lights come on. They do not come on when i have the truck in reverse. Any ideas what would cause this? It can be that the switch is bad because the lights work. So i don't know what else it could be.

While you don't specify the extremely necessary information about what type of trans you have, since the switches are very different between a manual and an auto, I'm going to assume you have an auto trans.

Your trans range sensor is misadjusted. Loosen the two bolts, put the tranny in reverse and adjust it until the lights are on in R and the engine starts in P and N.

There are usually two little notches, one on the stationary side of the sensor and one on the shaft-driven side that are supposed to line up perfectly in either Park or Neutral. Check for those too before trying the first method.

its a manual transmission... not sure what kind of transmission itself

Ok, that is weird. I'd try a switch first since they are cheap and fairly easy to replace.
