Return of the Five-Point-Oh!

I test drove an 05 mustang about a month ago, just for shits and giggles, 4.6L/auto, felt awful big and bulky, not nearly as much fun as a fox.

later,
Dustin

Sexy. I wonder if we can swap that in a Ranger. That would make a really killer sleeper.
My feeling is that they are going to be as wide as the 4.6 DOHC from before. They are already putting that Eco-Boost V-6 into early 30's Ford chassis's with the narrow frame. Not sure this is exactly what the new 5.0L is going to look like but ............they do come with a forged crank. And that 412 hp rating is at the bottom of what they will actually put out, could be 450 in reality.

Thats all good. Whats with the red circles around the cam sensor or cam timing adjusters?

I really don't know, think that was the same question on the Mustang site I pulled the picture from.
The motors are actually being build at the old Ford plant where they used to build the Rangers, in NJ.
Little background:

04-30-09 The equipment for the 5.0 coyote line continues to arrive. No summer shutdown for "coyote people" the line is to be up and running by June 20, 2009. First builds due to start in July for testing.
Things are going well from all I have heard.

05-07-09 Job 1 build date for full production at Essex plant is 12-02-2009. I understand we can order one for Christmas 2009.

07-09-09 Everything is going really well. The coyote line is coming to life and pilot production is taking place to check equipment and familiarize operators to the new engine line. The line is ahead of schedule and under budget. Still looks like a December 1st 2009 start Job1.

09-14-09 The line is now powered up for coyote. Only about 9 weeks to Job 1!

10-05-09 The forged steel crankshaft (Mustang) line is running cranks now. About 7 weeks to Job1 for production !

11-04-09 Production Engines will be headed to the dyno rooms for the final check and then the "numbers" people are waiting for will be released. The line is actually ahead of schedule. As with Ford's new rating all engines that pass must make at least the rated horsepower. Some will make more. The 6.2 was rated 411 but I have heard that many are making closer to 425 on average. The lowest should make 411hp. Better to be conservative with the ratings so that owners are happy that they got more than they thought is the current thinking.

I'm glad ford has the common sense to give more then promised versus another 99 cobra fiasco. Supposedly 300 hp and they made peanuts on the dyno, had the intake fix and a bunch of other things. Same thing with the gt500, made more like 425 on the dyno. A bit disappointing when you purchase a 50k dollar car. Back in the day the 302's, 351's, big blocks, you name it were all under rated. The boss 429 was more like a 550hp car from the factory rather then the supposed 400's rating.

You mean like when the 428 SCJ only made 5 more HP than the 390 (335 vs 330hp)? Think back then it was more for insurance purposes. Couple of the new Roush are rated at 540hp but testing shows 500-508 rwhp, thats about 580+ at the crank. Hope Ford keeps their sheep together!

Basically. To bad ford doesn't do it anymore. Now they promise you a car with 400 horses and don't deliver. I'm well aware of the crank horse power ratings being more correct, however to the average enthusiast that just buys, drives, and uses dealers to work on the car, they don't really understand the difference.

It's just getting sad out there is all I can say. What happened to the true "gear heads"?

It's funny you say that. I go up to the mustang meets on sunday night maybe once or twice a month. Theres quite a few of them that have just bought there cars, don't know what they have, when they have a fox sitting there that has a transbrake, big cam, heads, intake, stall and a gear from hell, yet they put around and just mash it. Nice folks but I think the gear head gene is getting weeded out. As for me I'll stick with it. Fab everything I own, and pretty much do everything myself aside from alignments. Going to start turbo fab on the mustang in the coming month hopefully.

I like the mods, if it wasn't so expensive and big I would happily stuff a 2v 5.4 in my Ranger.

I got a ride in a '07 GT, that thing motivated quite nicely. It looked a lot sharper than the boring Tempo inspired fox too IMO.

I miss my 1985 mustang gt. Idling off the line it was beating civic's! ok i know its not a hard thing to do.

you people realise that i am now going to go look up old mustangs to see if i can find one dirt cheap and just think... can i? will i? do i have time to?

How's that? 5.0L displacement is still 5.0L's of displacement.

Your so called 5.0L you talk about is NOT a 5.0L. It was rounded up. And in all math rules it was rounded up wrong.

5.0L = 305.19
4.94L= 302

So Suck it up and have a Merry X-mas

Thank you, Einstein, for providing us with such obvious facts that most true enthusiasts figured out 5 minutes after first drooling after one. :rolleyes:

Wake up and smell the coffee - a REAL 5.0 is a push rod motor.

so you have to like push rod V8s, Vacuum operated non-overdrive automatics, 4spds with poor gear spacing and no OD, solid rear axles, and engines that make you choke and your eyes burn when they pass you to be a true gear head. I just want to make sure I understand this......... if I prefer a DOHC 32 valve boosted V8 over a 16 valve push rod V8 then I can't be a "true" gear head........

get a life
