Retrieving eec codes? Stalling out and backfiring.

How do I go about hooking up a light to get codes from the computer on my 85 2.3l. I read the tech section article on it but I'm unsure where those connections are.

Also, as the title says, its stalling out and backfiring (I can smell the gas coming out of the exhaust right before it pops). I just installed a new computer in it yesterday in an unrelated (I hope) issue, and I replaced the coil pack hoping that it had just gone bad causing stuttering and backfires (didn't help).

Any suggestions?

Okay I just plugged in an obd1 scanner and I got a code for coolant temp sensor out of range. While that doesn't really make sense to me why it would cause those symptoms, it doesn't start doing it until the engine warms up completely.

I bought a new sensor but I don't know where the sensor is located on the engine. And it is the sensor the for the computer, not the dash light.

Was the engine at temp when you ran the test? The engine being cold during a self test will set ECT out of range codes.

A faulty sensor could cause similar issues though, making the computer think the engine is cold when it is not, and this is likely as you say it happens after warm up.

I believe the sensor you seek is near the thermostat housing, almost on the center line of the truck, right at the front of the engine.

Yeah the engine was at temp when I plugged in the scanner. I checked there but there isn't any wiring or anything. I think I found it right between the fuel injectors for cylinders 2 &3. Unless you know for sure that that is something else.

I'm pretty sure that's it. I pulled the plug off and it fits right onto my new sensor. And if I'm not mistaken, there is a coolant jacket kinda thing in the manifold for there.

Sensor replaced, problem still persists. Again doesn't start happening until at full operating temp. I've just unplugged the eec to reset it but I don't think that'll do anything for me. Also I can smell something plastic burning but can't find where its coming from.

Suggestions?

Okay, I'm pretty sure I got it fixed. I figured since I was definitely getting fuel still (backfiring and I could smell it coming out of the exhaust when it would stall out) if was most likely an issue confined to just the spark. I replaced the coil and that didn't help. I thought maybe the new computer was defective but I figured since I was still getting fuel, probably not likely. I replaced the cap and rotor on the dizzy and bingo bango, problem seems to have gone away. There wasn't any damage or anything but the rotor did look a little worn out.
