Retreaded Tires

Anyone had any expirence with them, Are they safe, i found some for a good deal and i was just wondering, thought it might be a good idea

If they are re-molded tires (Hi-tech retreads) and not just piece of tread glued onto a bare husk, chances are you'll be fine.

Many types of vehicles from industrial heavy equipment tires to tires on commercial aircraft, and even school buses run retreads. A modern retreaded tire is quite safe, they go through a very rigorous inspection process.

The misconception that they are bad is all the scraps from big rigs on the side of the highway, and they usually run retreaded tires. This is due more to improper maintenance than anything. Letting the pressure get too low, drive a few hundred (or thousand more likely) miles with 5-6,000lbs on them, and the steel belts fatigue (like bending a paper clip back and forth too many times), causing the tread to separate. You'll probably notice all the steel cords hanging out of them, so the re-treaded part didn't actually fail, the rest of the tire did.

I can confidently say that I would willingly run retreads on my truck, both street and trail. I just don't need new tires yet

I had some retreads back in the day (way back) that I used in the winter. My car had mags with 60's for the summer. I thought they wore out pretty fast but other wise they were fine.

I honestlty loved them. I had a set of 30x9.5x15 all terrains, 33x12.5x15 mud with spacer, and the 33x12.5x15 mud without spacer.. they all wore evenly and if I ever need tires again, I'll most likely pick up another set.

i have been running the HiTech ( now Treadwright) retreads for nearly 2 years. they are excellent tires! they still look brand new with no noticeable tire wear! i have 215/85x16 AT's on my lifted Geo Tracker. i will be transferring them to the 1983 Ranger 4x4 i just purchased as soon as i decide if i want to use spacers or get 16 in. wheels. they really are great tires and i opted for the "Green Diamond" (they are called something different now) traction enhancers as i live in northern Minnesota. they have been great in snow, ice, and even in the spring mud. aired down for use on the trails at the local ORV park, they do very well indeed. the narrow tread allows me to pick my line rather than having to try to muscle over every obstacle the much wider tires force you to do. these are on 10 ply rated Michelin casings and IF they ever wear out, i'll buy them again without hesitation!

I wouldnt run them on a tractor, much less a truck.

They wear out fast and sometimes the glue comes apart and you end up with castropic damage.

i've seen a BFG come apart and tear up a bed on a 200 f-250. luck of the draw if you ask me. I've never tried re-tread, but hear the newer ones are alot better made than they used to be and don't come apart nearly as often.

Thats because it was a crappy retread with a strip of tread pasted on a husk (which you should avoid like an ex-girlfriend, just don't even acknowledge it and keep walking.). Modern ones don't use glue, fresh rubber tread is melted right to the tire. One piece all the way around.

The same way they make a new tire... besides it is amazing what you can get by with on a tractor.
