The M5OD in my B4000 is ruined and i picked up an HD trans to swap in. I am going to replace the slave cylinder while im in there as i believe it is shot and making noise. Do i need to replace anything other than the slave itself like the tubes that run into the trans? Is OEM the best slave out? Any thing else that i would need?

I also want to replace the rear main seal as its leaking pretty heavily. Is that just a pop in circular seal?

This is a better slave cylinder because it's more difficult for dirt/etc to get in.

Get a new pilot bearing in there while you have everything apart. Really, you'd probably be better off replacing the clutch while you're at it, since it's a pretty big job to pull the tranny.

Also, make sure you either have the flywheel machined or get a new one. I used a coupon for Advance auto and was able to get a brand new flywheel for about $40; it would have cost me about the same to have mine machined.

Rear main seal is the circular one at the rear of the engine which you'll see after the flywheel is removed. It's kinda difficult to get off; the shop manual suggests throwing two sheetmetal screws in there and prying those out...didn't work for me. I just screwed them in until the seal started to back out.

Have fun. haha.

I would replace the clutch but it was replaced only roughly 3k mi before i baught the truck.

im actually looking forward to it. I work on cars for a living so its nice to work on something different.

Thought of something else. The shift rail plugs. Look that up in the tech section. Easy as cake to do when you have the tranny off.

I'm doing the exact same job here, except mine is the FM146 and an 89 2.9 4x4. I think a read on another thread that the above linked slave cylinder won't work on mine? I sure like thay boot covering the spring, can anyone confirm that for my transmission I have to go with the boot-less slave cylinder? I plan to change out the pilot bearing and rear main, clutch still seems fairly new. What are shift rail plugs and where would I get them? Advance and orielly don't have a listing for shift rail plugs. Also, the pan gasket? Just rtv it?

Apparently I don't have shift rail plugs on my fm146. I looked where it shows in the pic but there's nothing in that area that resembles that.

Gonna replace the flywheel and clutch before I put it back in. Need to replace the plastic hose that runs from the slave cylinder to the master. The transmission was pulled from a salvage yard and while it looks to be in working order, I wont know until I put it in. Can I just bolt this up without putting on the transfer case or drive shafts, run the truck and shift it through the gears to see if its sound or will it screw things up by not having all that hooked back up?
